The Federal Secure and Fair Enforcement for Mortgage Licensing Act (SAFE Act) is designed to enhance consumer protection and reduce fraud through the setting of minimum standards for the licensing and registration of mortgage loan originators (MLO).
The law requires every MLO to be registered in the Nationwide Mortgage Licensing System and Registry. Each registered MLO receives a unique ID number that never changes, even if the individual changes employers. This NMLS ID makes it easier for consumers to find information on their MLO’s work history in mortgage lending.
First Bank makes the NMLS ID numbers of its registered MLOs available to consumers in two ways.
- You may contact us directly and we will provide you with the NMLS ID of a specific First Bank Mortgage Loan Originator. You may contact us by visiting the First Bank location nearest to you or contacting us by phone. You can also find the NMLS ID by visiting the Mortgage Loan Advisor’s web page.
- Federal registrant information is available to the public through the NMLS Consumer Access website. This site allows users to search an online database of information about financial institutions which originate consumer mortgage loans and their registered Mortgage Loan Originator employees. Through this service, consumers are able to verify information about NMLS registered individuals and companies.
Searching and Accessing the NMLS Database
You may search the web site by a name, company, city, state, zip code, or by the NMLS ID number of either a company or a registered Mortgage Loan Originator. You will also find search tips and frequently asked questions on the NMLS Consumer Access website to assist you with looking for and understanding the information found on the site.
If you already know the NMLS ID number of the Mortgage Loan Originator you wish to verify, simply enter the number into the search box on the home page of the website.
